Five more fragments that could be human remains of 9/11 victims were unearthed on Wednesday at the former Fresh Kills landfill, bringing to 67 the total number of fragments recovered since sifting resumed on April 1.
After potential remains are collected at the landfill they are sent to an anthropology lab in Manhattan. In turn, anthropologists examine, photograph and assign a case number to the remains before they are sent to a forensic biology lab for possible extraction of DNA profiles, said Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office.
