VOICES to Host January 17th Symposium

Voices of September 11th and the Rutgers University School of Social Work will host a symposium entitled, "Promoting Resiliency in Communities Impacted by Trauma: Identification and Treatment of Long Term Needs" on Friday, January 17, 2014. The conference will mark the launch of the VOICES Center of Excellence for Community Resilience, an initiative that will share lessons learned to promote healing in the lives of those impacted by mass violence and other tragedies.

The Center will be a collaboration with public/private partnerships that will include research, education and training to guide communities in preparing for, responding to and recovering from traumatic events. More.


Helping the Newtown Community Heal

On the Eve of the first anniversary of the Sandy Hook School shootings, our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the 20 first-graders and 6 educators who died, those who survived, and the community affected by this tragic event. This week there has been much attention focused on the need for school safety, the weaknesses in the mental health care system and the challenges of addressing violence in our country.

All of these are very important issues and the voices of the families and the community will play a critical role in pushing for reforms to ensure that other families don't suffer as they have. More.

Remembering Our Friend and Colleague, Darlene Johnson

I am writing with the sad news that our longtime friend and former co-worker, Darlene Johnson, has passed away after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

First and foremost, Darlene was a personal friend who quietly supported our family through a challenging time after 9/11. We will always be grateful! Darlene was also instrumental in shaping Voices of September 11th - first as a volunteer and board member, and later in a leadership role at VOICES for over 5 years. More.

New Canaan based Voices of September 11th held its 6th Annual Gala at Guastavino's in New York City on October 16th. The keynote speaker for the event was former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The Building Bridges Award was given to Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly.

Other participants included singer/songwriter Mary Fahl, Joe Daniels and Alice Greenwald of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, as well as the emcee for the event, veteran television personality, Joan Lunden. It seems that a day doesn't go by that 9/11 is not in the news - whether it is a story about a movie or television show, conflict in the Middle East, or once again, an incident of mass violence. This past weekend, the VOICES staff participated in the News 4 New York Giants Health and Fitness Expo. Over 20,000 people attended the one-of-a-kind weekend event held in the MetLife Stadium. The VOICES team got a chance to meet several members of the News 4 team right on the field where the NY Giants play in the Fall! Today marks the 20th Anniversary of the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center, where 6 men and women, and an unborn child perished in the attacks. Over a thousand were injured and thousands who worked in the buildings escaped to safety.
