WEST NYACK — Four-year-old Cameron Ellis excitedly waved his little hands as horses from Nickel-O farms galloped past him during the West Nyack Rotary's annual Memorial Day parade.
Karina and Michael Ellis said they brought their son, Cameron, and his baby brother, Justin, to celebrate with their fellow community members who lined West Nyack's streets yesterday afternoon.
The parade, which featured Clarkstown South High School's marching band and the marching bands of West Nyack and Strawtown elementary schools, ended in the West Nyack Rotary's Volunteer Park for a ceremony to commemorate those who have died to protect their country
The grand marshal of the parade, Town Board member Ralph Mandia, told the gathered crowd that it is "important to honor the sacrifices of those that fought and gave their lives to ensure the freedoms all Americans enjoy."
The ceremony also included a dedication of the Patriot Garden in memory of Thomas Foley of West Nyack, a New York City firefighter who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack at the World Trade Center. The garden includes a fountain, a plaque and a portion of steel from the World Trade Center.
