City: New York
State: New York
Country: United States

Description: Purpose:The "living memorial" is a "Hope of Harmony" garden bed. It is a 4x8 plot with red, white, and blue annuals as borders on four sides, centered with a dwarf spruce tree donated by a friend of a firefighter from W. 100th St. FDNY station 4 blocks away who died in WTC.
Reason site was selected:The garden's members wanted to respond to the events of 9/11.
Events planned for site:The garden posted a translation from a German poem on the event in an Oak leaf circlet. They lit a 30-day candle in a tall glass holder at the entrance to the garden and kept it lit. The Community Garden is planning to hold a candelight vigil and have its members present for a raising of the flag, and a short service in the early evening. Finally, organizers did not notice an immediate increase in garden visitors after 9/11 until late in winter 2001 and early spring 2002, when more poeple stopped in just to sit quietly and read.
