Captain John Ogonowski Memorial Square (Dracut)

Dedicated to: Captain John Ogonowski

Type of Memorial: Stone Engraving

Location: On the side of the street

Address: Jones Ave. and Wheeler Rd.

City: Dracut

State: Massachusetts

Country: United States

Open to Public: Yes

Description:

Purpose: A memorial to Captain John Ogonowski, who was lost on September 11, 2001.

Reason site was selected: This square is directly across from the home and farm of John Ogonowski's parents, who still occupy the residence. Although not his own land, John's father had mown the lawn and planted flowers on the site for years. This proximity to John's boyhood home and the site's visibility on the main road are significant.

Events planned for site: When the state roads were reconfigured and the curbing improved, this square was dedicated with a large monument, tree planting, and an official renaming. The Governor, congressman, and other public officials attended this event with about 200 people. No other events are intended for this permanently visible site, although it is a meaningful site for the family members.

Do you believe your memorial is a sacred place?: "I don't know if I'd call them sacred, they're definitely very special. They are a wonderful tribute to John, but we would all really rather have John back and leave all these wonderful things behind," said Peg Ogonowski.
