In Other Words

Type of Memorial: Community Garden

Location: Rue Toteron

City: Saint Lo

Country: France

Description:

Purpose: To connect community members, to give the youth a chance to literally plant their visions in the earth, to use plant material as an artistic medium.

Reason site was selected: The design consists of a collection of words chosen by the young people of the community. The site is easily seen from above the nearby ramparts of a historic fortress. It was important that visitors be able to read the living texts from a distance.

Events planned for site: Group gardening, public discussions.

Do you believe your memorial is a sacred place?: It will give the community a chance to look towards the future rather than building yet another memorial to the past (the city was ravaged by WWII and has never really visually recovered.) Using living plant material as a metaphor for growth sends a positive message to an otherwise bland landscape in a city where most youths move away when they are old enough to leave.
